SILVER METAL TEST
Typical marks like S925, 925, or BIS Hallmark can help identify sterling silver, but there are also simple checks you can try at home.
Sniff Test
Genuine sterling silver usually does not have a strong smell. Lower-purity metals may have a faint coppery smell because of higher copper content.
Bend Test
Sterling silver is softer than many base metals. If an item bends slightly with gentle pressure, it may be silver. Use care and avoid forcing delicate jewellery.
Rub Test
Rub a small area with a clean white cloth or silver polishing cloth. If black residue appears, it may indicate sterling silver oxidation.
Magnet Test
Silver is not magnetic. If a jewellery piece strongly sticks to a magnet, it is likely not sterling silver.
These tests are helpful indicators, but professional hallmarking or jeweller verification is always the most reliable method.
